Standard vs. Itemized Deduction Helper

Estimate if itemizing deductions is better than the standard deduction for Tax Year 2024.

How to Use Deduction Helper (Tax Year 2024):

  • Select your Filing Status.
  • Check the boxes if you (or your spouse, if applicable) are Age 65+ or Blind. This increases the standard deduction.
  • Enter your estimated Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). This is needed for the medical expense limit. (AGI is Gross Income minus certain 'above-the-line' deductions).
  • Enter estimates for your potential Itemized Deductions:
    • Medical Expenses: Enter total paid (only amounts over 7.5% of AGI are deductible).
    • State/Local Taxes (SALT): Include property taxes + (income OR sales taxes). Max deduction capped at $10,000.00 per household.
    • Home Mortgage Interest: Enter the amount from Form 1098.
    • Gifts to Charity: Enter your estimated cash/non-cash donations (AGI limits apply but aren't calculated here).
  • Click "Calculate & Compare". The tool will compare your estimated itemized total to your standard deduction.
